Colposcopy is a diagnostic gynaecological procedure used for the detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. It is typically recommended when a Pap test or HPV test shows abnormal findings. Using a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope, the gynaecologist can closely examine cervical tissue and identify areas that may require further investigation or treatment.
When is Colposcopy Recommended
Colposcopy is usually performed following abnormal cervical screening results, such as an abnormal Pap smear or a positive HPV test. The examination allows the physician to assess cervical tissue more precisely and, if necessary, perform a small biopsy for histological analysis.
Colposcopy plays an important role in the prevention of cervical cancer. Through early diagnosis and appropriate follow-up, most precancerous cervical changes can be detected and treated before they progress to cancer. Regular screening and proper medical guidance are essential for maintaining women’s reproductive health and long-term wellbeing.
