Caesarean Section

Caesarean section is a surgical method of delivery performed when the safety of the mother or the baby requires it.

Caesarean section is an alternative mode of delivery in which the baby is born through a surgical incision in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. It is performed when vaginal birth is not considered safe or feasible, either due to complications arising during pregnancy or during labour itself. In modern obstetric practice, caesarean section is carried out based on clear clinical indications and careful planning to ensure optimal maternal and neonatal safety.

Indications for caesarean section may include failure to progress in labour, abnormal fetal presentation, previous caesarean deliveries, multiple pregnancy, significant pregnancy complications, or emergency situations that pose a risk to the mother or fetus. Although it is considered a safe and well-established surgical procedure, it requires careful preoperative planning and appropriate postoperative care to ensure optimal recovery.

When Is It Indicated

The decision is made based on clinical criteria, the course of the pregnancy, and the condition of both mother and fetus, with maternal and neonatal safety as the primary priority.

Procedure and Recovery

Caesarean section is performed in a structured surgical setting under appropriate anaesthesia and medical supervision. Recovery is generally smooth, with a gradual return to normal daily activities under medical guidance and follow-up care.

The Role of Information and Counselling

Clear and thorough counselling before and after the procedure helps reduce anxiety and supports a smoother recovery. With evidence-based guidance, individualised care, and close postoperative monitoring, caesarean section can be a safe and effective mode of delivery, safeguarding the health of both mother and newborn.
